Understand your visitors

See how people use your Google Site.

Google Analytics helps you see how people reach the site, which pages they open and where they leave. Add it once, then use the data to improve the pages that matter.

Start with a question

Analytics is useful when it helps you answer something about the site. You might want to know whether visitors reach your contact page, which service page gets attention, or whether a campaign sends people to the right page.

You need editing access to the Google Site and a Google Analytics property for that site. Google Sites asks for the property ID. You do not need to paste a tracking script into the page.

01

Create or choose an Analytics property

Open Google Analytics and choose the property for this website. If you do not have one, create it first. Google’s Google Sites Analytics guide calls this the property ID.

02

Copy the property ID

Copy the ID for that property. Check that it belongs to the site you are working on. A property can collect data from more than one place, so a clear name helps you avoid mixing projects.

03

Add it in Google Sites

Open the site in the Google Sites editor. Select Settings, open Analytics, paste the property ID, then save the setting.

04

Publish the site

Click Publish so visitors can load the updated version. Open the published URL in a normal browser tab and visit a few pages.

05

Check Analytics the next day

Google says data can take up to 24 hours to appear. Look for your own visit first, then wait for real visitors before deciding whether a page performs well.

Use the data to improve the site

Analytics shows visits. Search Console shows Google Search.

Use Analytics to understand what people do on the site. Use Search Console to check whether Google can find it and which searches bring visitors there.
